One U.S. soldier believes his Bible saved his life..... Pfc. Brendon Schweigart, 22, was helping retrieve a tank in Iraq in August 2007 when he was hit by a sniper’s bullet. The bullet penetrated his bullet-proof plate, but it did not reach his heart. Schweigart had a Bible in his pocket beneath his vest and the bullet embedded itself in it, saving Schweigart from more serious injury – perhaps even death! “(The Bible) definitely prevented more serious injury, because if it wouldn’t have been there, it would have ricocheted off my … bullet-proof plate and more than likely would have gone back into my chest, causing more damage,” Schweigart said. * The Bible may not always stop a literal bullet, but it can do for us something far more important… If applied to our lives, it will stop the fatal bullet of SIN. Sin will destroy our souls (Romans 6:23), and our archenemy, Satan, seeks to destroy us by making sure we have plenty of opportunities to fall into the trap of sin through temptation (1 Peter 5:8; James 1:14-15). But the Bible will save our souls! It’s not enough to carry a Bible in our pockets; we must hide it in our hearts (Psalm 119:11). James says, “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). We “plant” the Word in our hearts when we read it, study it, and apply it to our lives. The Bible teaches us that the Way to victory over sin and death is through Jesus Christ, God’s Son (1 Corinthians 15:57). Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins (Ephesians 1:7), and He will save us when we obey His Word! To be saved we must believe in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from our sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized (immersed) in His name for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; 22:16). Then as we continue to walk in the light of His Word, His blood will continue to cleanse us from sin (1 John 1:7). The Bible may not always stop a literal bullet, but it WILL save our souls – IF we will plant it in our heart through an obedient faith! Will YOU? David A. Sargent, Minister Church
