Dawson Moorer was a burden-bearer. He cared deeply for others: family,
friends, and even complete strangers. Amanda Davidson, one of Dawson’s
nieces, wrote of her uncle: “Uncle Dawson was one of the most generous,
selfless people I have ever known. He would do anything to help
someone. He always put others before himself. After my dad got sick,
he would always make sure to go by and check on my mom and dad. After
my dad passed away, he always would go by and make sure my mom was okay
and see if she needed anything. He always was thinking of others and
was a true servant in the Lord’s kingdom. I always knew I could depend
on him, and it was always a great comfort to know I could call on him if
needed. I am honored to call him my uncle, and what a great legacy he
has left for all of us to follow. We are truly blessed to have been a
part of his life.”
Dawson cared deeply about people around him. He was especially
concerned about the spiritual welfare of others. His son, Greg,
described this “burden” in Dawson’s heart well: “A lost soul was a
burden for him.” Dawson valued souls.
Dawson understood all people are sinners (Romans 3:23) and sin separates
us from God (Isaiah 59:1-2). He knew that a sinner is lost and
desperately needs the Savior. He knew that the Gospel is the Good News
that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third
day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) providing salvation from sin and eternal life
to those who accept His offer on His terms (Romans 6:23). Dawson shared
the Good News of Jesus with many people. Through the years, he used the
Jule Miller filmstrips to teach others about Jesus. Bill Sawrey was one
of those. Bill said he would not be a Christian today if it weren’t for
Bro. Dawson.
Dawson wanted all to know that Jesus Christ died
on the cross for the sins of all people (1 John 2:2). He wanted others
to know the Good News that Jesus bore the burden of our sin so that we
can be set free and live eternally with Him (Hebrews 9:28). Dawson
wanted all to know that we can accept the gift of salvation and eternal
life by placing our faith
and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turning from
our sins in repentance
(Acts 17:30-31),
confessing
Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10), and being
baptized
(immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). Dawson
was also concerned that baptized believers continue to walk in the light
of God’s Word so that the blood of Jesus can continue to cleanse them
from sin (1 John 1:7-9). A Christian who strayed away was also a burden
to Dawson. He would go in search of lost sheep to bring them back into
the fold (see Matthew 18:12-14).
Why did Dawson care so much about others? He had a heart for God, and
he loved what God loves: people. He had a burden in his heart to tell
others about the Burden-Bearer who can save our souls.
He’d want YOU to know the Good News, too. Won’t you allow the
Burden-Bearer to save you through your trusting obedience?
