From Razzie to Oscar

The two awards are designed to identify the best of the best and the worst of the worst.  According to Wikipedia…

  • The Golden Raspberry Awards, called the Razzies for short, is an annual award ceremony held in Los Angeles to recognize the worst in film.  Founded by American copywriter and publicist John J.B. Wilson in 1981, the event precedes the corresponding Academy Award ceremony by one day.

  • The Academy Award (mainly known as the Oscars) are accolades presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers.

Recently, Sandra Bullock won an Oscar AND a Razzie!

On Sunday, March 8, Sandra Bullock won an Oscar as best actress for her role in the movie "The Blind Side."  She was awarded the Oscar for her portrayal as “a gritty, determined mom from the Deep South ” (as described by Neal Pollard) with a big heart of compassion.

However, on Saturday, March 7 -- the night before the Oscars -- Bullock personally accepted the Razzie Award for worst actress for her performance in another movie: “All About Steve.”

Asked about being the only person in history to win an Oscar and Razzie in the same year, Bullock said, "You take the good with the not so good."  She joked about where the two statuettes would go on her mantle. "They'll sit side by side in a nice little shelf somewhere, the Razzie maybe on a different shelf, lower," she said laughing.

I’m sure we all believe we have our own “Oscar-Winning” performances – not in portraying a part, but in actually living our lives.  And, if we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll also have to admit that we deserve several Razzie Awards, for each of us has made (and will continue to make) many mistakes.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

The Good News (the Gospel) is that although we deserve far worse than Razzie Awards, God wants to give us something far greater than an Oscar – not because of our own merits, but because of His Son, JESUS!

God loves us so much that He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, so that we might have forgiveness and life in Him (Ephesians 1:7).

Through Jesus, each of us may have forgiveness and life when we: place our faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from sin in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).

Because of Jesus, you and I can be forgiven of our “razzie” (sinful) performances and one day receive something far better than an Oscar: A Crown of Life!  (James 1:12).

Won’t YOU accept His offer on His terms?
