John Currier was found
guilty of murder in 1949 and sentenced to life in prison. Later he was
paroled to work on a farm near Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1968, Currier’s sentence was terminated, and a letter bearing the
good news was sent to him. But John never saw the letter, nor was he
told anything about it. Ten years went by. Then a state parole officer
learned about Currier’s plight, found him, and told him that his
sentence had been terminated. He was a free man. *
We are all guilty of sin, "for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God" (Romans 3:23). In fact, Jesus died on the cross for our
sins, not His own. So our sins put Jesus on the cross; we are
responsible for the death of Christ! The sentence for our crimes is a
death sentence, for "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).
Yet, it is because Jesus died on the cross for our sins that we can
be set free from sin and death! He paid the price for our redemption
from sin. "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness
of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Ephesians 1:7).
This is the Good News of the Gospel! The Apostle Paul proclaimed the
Gospel (Good News): "I declare to you the gospel which I preached to
you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you
are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you — unless
you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the
Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day
according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).
We are guilty of sin, but God loves us so much that He gave Jesus to
pay the price for our redemption, our freedom! That is the Good News
that everyone needs to hear and embrace, including you.
God will save from sin and give eternal life to those who place their
faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from their sins in
repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10),
and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins
(Acts 2:38). He will continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to
walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
Now, having heard the Good News, won’t you embrace it through your
trusting obedience?
