A Special Bond

On March 4, 2019, Det. Michael Harton of the North Haven, Connecticut Police Department was on duty at a movie theater when suddenly a mother came running out of a theater with her baby in her arms.  The baby, three-month-old Eimaan Huckaby, was in distress.  Her mother, Nikki, had frantically come to the police officer for help.  “My baby is not breathing!” she exclaimed to Harton.

Harton, who is also a trained EMT, began performing a variation of the Heimlich maneuver for infants.  “I started with back blows and that’s when she curled her back up and completely went limp on me,” Harton said. “Then I started doing back blows, chest compressions, back blows, chest compressions.”

Huckaby remembers screaming and praying as Harton worked with little Eimaan, who weighed about 10 lbs. as she had been born prematurely in December.

Suddenly, Eimaan started to cry.  Harton, relieved and thankful, kept holding the little girl until the medics arrived.  He gave her the nickname, “Little Angel.”

Harton checked on Little Angel over the next few months.  On the one-year anniversary of the life-saving episode, Huckaby and her little angel visited Harton at the police station.  A family friendship formed.  Harton and his wife, Susan, began meeting with Huckaby and “Tooka” (Eimaan’s nickname) for dinner on occasion.  They also began celebrating birthdays, holidays, and special occasions together.  Harton and his wife were present on the day that Tooka began her first day of kindergarten last fall.

Harton became known to Tooka as “Uncle Mike.”  "It has been so rewarding for us to have all of them [as] a part of our lives," Huckaby said.  "And it's also a story because we come from two different walks of life. We're from two different cultures, two different races. And for us to come together, especially in the way today's world is with community and police, it just brings a whole new light to things," she said.

"[The Hartons] treat us like family and are so supportive,” Huckaby declared. *

When we were “dead in our trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), Jesus came to our rescue (Galatians 1:4).  He gave His life to save us from our sins (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) so that we might live.  Because of Jesus, we may experience an abundant life now (John 10:10) and eternal life in heaven (Romans 6:23).

God will save and give eternal life to those who place their faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from their sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  He will continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).

With those that accept Jesus’ offer of salvation and life, a special bond forms.  It’s the bond of love in God’s spiritual family, the church.  It’s a relationship that will endure forever.  For that life-giving relationship, we shall be forever thankful.
