As Brandee Artale was breastfeeding her baby, Madison,
she noticed that something was different about her baby’s eyes. "I
looked down, and I was like, ‘there’s something weird in her eyes,’" she
said. Visits to the doctor revealed that Madison had congenital
cataracts. Something had to be done, or Madison could lose her sight.
The Artale
family was referred to Children’s Nebraska Hospital where Madison was
placed under the care of Dr. Paul Rychwalski, medical director of
ophthalmology. Rychwalski explained to the family that in eyes with
cataracts, the lens that sits directly behind the pupil is cloudy. "In
Madison's case, it was a dense, white, cloudy opacity right in the
center of the visual axis," he said. "So there was no way to get
through that to stimulate the retina and bring sight to her brain. She
was at risk of permanent vision loss if we didn't clear this visual
access in a timely fashion."
Madison
underwent her first surgery at just 2 1/2 months old. Two more delicate
surgeries were required. Now, at 7 months of age, Madison, with the
help of some special prescription glasses, can see clearly. She is
captivated by the world around her, according to her parents. *
In John 9, we
read the account of a man that was born blind. Jesus, the Son of God,
miraculously healed the man of his blindness. This caused a great stir
among the religious leaders of the day. Sadly, they were most disturbed
because this had taken place on the Sabbath. They viewed Jesus’ action
of making clay and putting it on the eyes of the blind man and healing
him as a violation of the Sabbath rules.
Not only does
the blind man receive his physical sight, he also “sees” that Jesus is
the Son of God. Watch his progression of faith in the statements that
he makes about Jesus (see verses 17, 25, 33).
The man’s
growing faith in Jesus angered the religious leaders and they cast him
out of the synagogue.
Watch what
happens next: “Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had
found him, He said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of God?’ He
answered and said, ‘Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?’ And
Jesus said to him, ‘You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking
with you.’ Then he said, ‘Lord, I believe!’ And he worshiped Him.”
The man
received his physical eyesight as well as “spiritual” eyesight. He saw
Jesus for Who He was (and is!): the Son of God.
Dear reader,
study the life of Jesus and His teachings. Examine the evidence. My
prayer is that you will also come to “see” and believe that Jesus is the
Son of God and that you will follow Him.
This same
Jesus died on the cross for your sins and mine so that we can be saved
from our sins and receive the gift of eternal life (John 3:16).
God will save and give eternal life to those who
place their faith
and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from
their sins in repentance
(Acts 17:30-31), confess
Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are
baptized
(immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He will
continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to walk in the light of
His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
Do you “see”
Him for who He is? Will you worship and follow Him?
