When is the last
time you used a pay phone?
For some, it has
been a long time. Some do not even know what a pay phone is.
Brian Davis of
Minnesota likes payphones. He has always wanted to set up a payphone on
his property. Last fall, his desire became a reality. For about $800,
Davis installed a pay phone on the edge of his property beside a
street. The column on which the phone is affixed sits on a floor of
bricks along with a wooden bench and a trash can. A sign above the
phone clearly signals to passersby that the phone is available for use.
It costs a dollar to use the pay phone. Not many
use it. Some stop by just to take a picture with the payphone – a relic
of a former way of communicating with others before cell phones. That
was another motivation for Davis’ project:
"I just thought it
would be really fun to remind people of what life was like before we
were all on our cell phones and texting each other," he said.
Last week the phone was very useful. A young
child who had become lost used the payphone to call 911. Because of the
use of the phone, authorities were able to locate the child and return
him back to his home. *
Our sins cause us to be lost (Isaiah 59:1-2).
Because of our sins we are disoriented, defeated, and headed on a path
to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). We desperately need help.
God’s invitation to the people of Judah long ago
remains current today:
“Call to Me, and I
will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not
know” (Jeremiah 33:3).
Actually, God is
calling out to us through His Gospel (2 Thessalonians 2:14), the Good
News that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again so that in
Him, we can be reconciled to God (1 Corinthians 15:1-3; 2 Corinthians
5:17-21).
In response to God’s Gospel call, we “call out” to
Him by trusting and obeying Christ. God will “answer the call” of those
who place their faith
and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from
their sins in repentance
(Acts 17:30-31),
confess Jesus
before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are
baptized (immersed) into Christ for the
forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He will continue to cleanse from sin
those who continue to walk on the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
When we call out to
God in this way, we will be found, saved from our lost condition, and
placed on the path that leads to our eternal, heavenly home.
To those lost in
sin, God pleads, “Call Me!” Jesus has already paid the price for our
redemption. We must simply accept it on His terms.
“And now why are you
waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the
name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).
