Help from Above

A man was working at an industrial construction site in Nevada, Iowa, when he fell 25 feet into a concrete tank, injuring himself.  Paramedics from the Nevada Fire Department were called to the scene.  They entered the tank and stabilized the injured man.  But how could they get him out of the tank?

Because the site was under construction, it was difficult to access the tank with machinery.  But there was an alternative: there was a crane onsite.  Rescuers affixed a rescue basket to the cables of the crane using a system of ropes and carabiners.  With the “steady hands” of the crane operator, the man was carefully and safely lifted out of the tank to a waiting ambulance.

It was an unusual and specialized rescue operation that involved several agencies.  The team involved "the steady hands of the crane operator, Story County Sheriff dispatch, Story County Medical Center, Ames Fire Department and our own staff," said fire officials.  "This rescue was seamless." *

Because of our own poor choices, we were found in a precarious situation in our sins.  Without outside aid, our outlook was fatal.

But then help came from above.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 ESV

Jesus “gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.” – Galatians 1:4 NASB

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8 NIV

The Son of God had to give His life for us on the cross in order to rescue us.  Through His atoning sacrifice, God extends His saving hand to us.  If we embrace His offer through our trusting obedience, He will save us and give to us eternal life.

God will save those who place their faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from their sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Jesus before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  He will continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).

Those who accept God’s offer of salvation can fully identify with the words of James Rowe in the song, “Love Lifted Me”:

I was sinking deep in sin
Far from the peaceful shore
Very deeply stained within
Sinking to rise no more

But the master of the sea
Heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me
Now safe am I

Love lifted me! Love lifted me!
When nothing else could help
Love lifted me!

There is help from above.  God is extending His rescuing hand to you through the cross of Christ.  He will save you if you will trust and obey Him
