Devan Bonagura doesn’t work at Walmart, but as an employee of a
third-party company that sells phones at the store, he met an elderly
Walmart employee identified as “Nola” on her name tag. Nola was resting
a bit in the breakroom, looking quite weary. Bonagura engaged the woman
in conversation and took a brief video of her. He posted the video on
TikTok with the caption “Life shouldn’t be this hard…”
Bonagura learned more
about Nola’s situation. She had been working for Walmart for 20 years.
Her plan was to keep working until she paid off her mortgage which
totaled around $170,000. Bonagura knew it would take many years for her
to be able to pay off that loan. He wanted to help her.
With the encouragement
of some of his followers on TikTok, Bonagura opened a GoFundMe page for
Nola to try to raise $10,000 to go toward her mortgage. He entitled the
page, “Let’s help Nola retire.” Within 24 hours, the GoFundMe page
raised over $100,000.
An article on
www.boredpanda.com
published on November 17, 2022, stated that since the 15-second video of
Nola was posted on TikTok on November 3, it has been viewed 29.1 million
times and received 4.3 million likes.
Bonagura set up a
meeting with Nola on November 5 to inform her of the gift that he wanted
to share with her. The meeting was videoed and shared on TikTok.
Bonagura revealed to Nola how he has posted a video about her and set up
a GoFundMe account for her. “We are all super proud of you,” he said,
“and we wanted to offer you the $110,000 that has been raised for you.”
Nola was stunned by the offer and responded, “I’d accept it, but I’d
still have to work until I get the other $60,000 paid off the house.”
“It won’t take long now with all that money,” she added. “That’s what’s
holding me at work – the house.”
At the latest viewing,
over $186,000 has been raised through the GoFundMe account. All of the
funds have been transferred to Nola, with more than enough funds to pay
off her mortgage. She plans to retire at the start of the New Year. *
Because of our sins, we
have an astounding debt. We could work for an eternity and never be
able to pay it off. With this debt, we are doomed.
However, God loves us so
much that He gave His Son Jesus to pay our debt by dying on the cross
for our sins (Ephesians 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18-19). Only the sinless Son of
God could do that for us, and Jesus willingly gave His life for us so
that our debt could be paid and we can receive the gift of eternal life
(Romans 6:23).
God will clear the debt of sin and give eternal
life to those who place their faith
and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from
their sins in repentance
(Acts 17:30-31),
confess Jesus
before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are
baptized (immersed) into Christ for the
forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He will continue to cleanse from sin
those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
Jesus’ atoning payment
for your sin can be applied to your “account” when you accept His offer
through your trusting obedience. Won’t you?
