When you see a burning car, what do you do? Get away from it, right?
Not if you are police
officers seeking to rescue an unconscious woman trapped in a burning
car.
Earlier this week, seven
officers with the Savannah (GA) Police Department responded to the scene
of a car crash. They saw flames coming from under the hood of a 1998
Lincoln Town car. The driver had made it out of the car, but an
18-year-old woman was unconscious in the front passenger seat. The
officers ran toward the car to rescue the woman. They found the
passenger door either locked or jammed due to the accident. They were
able to pull her out through the rear door of the vehicle and carry her
to safety away from the burning vehicle. Both the driver and the woman
were taken to a local hospital and treated for serious injuries.
The police officers were
hailed as heroes.
“I am so proud of these officers for
their actions when responding to the scene last night,” Chief Roy Minter
said. “They literally ran toward the flames and worked quickly as a team
to not only remove the passenger from the car but get her to a safe
location. Had they not acted as they did, the passenger in the car could
have suffered more serious injuries or even lost her life.” *
When we were in danger of the flames of hell because of our sins, Jesus
“went into the fire” to save us. “He Himself bore our sins in His body
on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by
His wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24). He suffered the wrath
of God against sin on our behalf. The Bible calls that “propitiation”
(“atoning sacrifice” NIV). “And He Himself is the propitiation for our
sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:2).
“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent
His Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10).
God will save and give eternal life to those who
place their faith
and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from
their sins in repentance
(Acts 17:30-31),
confess Jesus
before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are
baptized (immersed) into Christ for the
forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He will continue to cleanse from sin
those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
Instead of abandoning us
to suffer because of our wrong choices, Jesus “ran into the flames” to
save us.
Won’t YOU accept
His offer of redemption and eternal life?
