“Why, God?”
I’ve been
asking this question over the last few days.
Have you ever
asked this question?
As a
preacher, I’m expected to be able to answer this question. But I have
learned that there are some questions that I will never be able to
answer.
You will
likely encounter some very difficult situations in life. You may
question how some terrible things can happen in a world that is created
and sustained by God. You will be confronted with some things that are
hard to accept. There will be questions that you can’t answer.
Where will
you turn? To whom shall you go?
In John 6, we
read how Jesus taught some things that were hard to accept. Even some
of His disciples turned away from following Him. Jesus turned to His
twelve apostles and asked, “You do not want to leave also, do you?”
(John 6:67 NASB).
“Simon Peter
answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal
life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy
One of God” (John 6:68-69 ESV).
There’s the
question again: “To whom shall we go?”
Amidst the
difficulties and challenges of this life, I encourage you to turn to
Jesus. Peter’s conclusion was that there is nowhere else to turn.
Jesus has the words of eternal life. We need to trust Him and entrust
our lives to Him, even when we don’t have all of the answers to life’s
difficult questions.
God will save
and give eternal life to those who place their
faith and trust in
Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from sin in
repentance (Acts 17:30-31),
confess Jesus before
men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized
(immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38). He will
continue to cleanse from sin and prepare for an eternal home those who
continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).
Perhaps one
day, all our questions will be answered. But for now, even with some
unanswered questions, I’m going to trust God. Why? Because He loved
you and me so much that He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for
our sins so that one day, we can leave this sin-cursed world and go to
heaven to live with Him for eternity. In heaven, God will wipe away
every tear from our eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor
crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things will have
passed away (Revelation 21:4).
That is the
ultimate hope, and it’s only through Jesus that this hope can be
realized (John 14:6).
“Where could
I go? Oh, where could I go
Seeking a refuge for my soul?
Needing a friend to save me in the end,
Where could I go but to the Lord?
